PEOPLE:  OUR EM RESIDENTS

Class of 2012

Feel free to email them if you have questions about our program. You can email them by clicking on their names.

Susan Brim, MD MPH
Tulane University

Susan received her Bachelors and Masters degree from Stanford University, and received her MD/MPH in Tropical Medicine from Tulane. She worked with the CDC on applied epidemiology projects during her extended medical school career at Tulane. Her work regarding vaccinations for children with asthma has been published in MMWR and has also been referenced by JAMA. Besides having letters of recommendations which essentially equate her to the next best thing to sliced bread, we love that she's interested in trying new foods, cooking, and is an avid rock climber.

Elizabeth Brown, MD PhD
University of Washington

Rollover: Liz and cute Alaskan sled dog puppy
Liz received her PhD in Epidemiology at the University of Washington, studying STDs and HIV. She spent a year studying biochemistry in Austria as a Fulbright Fellow. Our faculty are already clamoring to work with her, not only because of her academic prowess, but because she is just such a fun, easy-going, and dynamic person! She broke the stereotype of what we envisioned a PhD would be. When she first landed in San Francisco and visited our program, she said "I feel at home here." We totally agree- welcome home.
Caitlin Dwyer-McNally, MD
University of Rochester

Rollover: Sailing in
British Virgin Islands

Caitlin received her Bachelors from MIT, where she was also a member of the NCAA Gymnastics team. She did a year of research after her undergraduate years in a neurovascular lab at MIT. During medical school, many different specialties tried to recruit her given her amazing clinical skills, strong work ethic, easy-going personality, and professionalism, but we are lucky to have drawn her to emergency medicine. Even luckier for us, she matched here with us! One of her letters summarized it best - "Caitlin is a rock star."
Benjamin Hippen, MD
University of Iowa

Rollover:
Separated at birth?
Ben has had an interesting route in getting to our EM residency program. After receiving a Bachelors degree in Music from Harvard, he was co-owner of a major music software company and held leadership roles in various other audio software companies such as Midisoft. Ben also lived in Eritrea (East Africa), working as a music teacher and educational consultant for the Ministry of Education before getting airlifted out by the U.S. Marines because of the escalating wars nearby. Ben has done tons of other things, but there's only so much space to write. With these amazing life experiences, he excelled throughout medical school such that one of his letters said "How do you spell strong? H-I-P-P-E-N". Apparently, that's how you spell - cool - also.

Hemal Kanzaria, MD

UC San Francisco

Rollover
:
Hemal at Big Sur

Hemal is one of our two hometown UCSF students who matched with us! He received a Bachelors degree from Brown. We were all amazed by his dedication and commitment to public service and global health, as evidenced by his founding the UCSF branch of Recovering Medical Equipment for the Developing World. His efforts have led to the distribution of over $75,000 of unused medical supplies to over 23 in-need countries. He has spent significant time with the CDC and Brown’s International Health Institute working to alleviate preventable infectious disease in various developing countries. Incredibly, Hemal still managed to excel clinically and graduated from UCSF at the top of his class... while making it look easy and fun. We secretly think Hemal somehow has discovered a way to get 25 hours in each day.

Bory Kea, MD
Stanford University
Bory has only a short move from Stanford to join us here in San Francisco. She received two Bachelors degrees from Oregon State University in Bioengineering and International Studies in Bioengineering. During her medical school years, she co-founded and co-chaired the Cardinal Free Clinic - an umbrella organization overseeing the two major free clinics associated with Stanford. She also took a year off during medical school to pursue dermatomyositis research in a biochemistry and dermatology lab. Upon returning to her clinical rotations, it was clear from her evaluations that Bory was a star amongst her peers. Bory's commitment to community service, academics, and clinical care make her a triple threat to be reckoned with.
Patrick Lenaghan, MD
Georgetown University

Rollover:
Patrick at a hot surf spot in Oahu

Patrick received a Bachelors degree from Georgetown in Math and Philosophy, while also being a member of the Men's Track and Field and Cross Country teams. He was heavily involved in various ophthalmologic projects throughout medical school, including clinical research and international volunteerism through Unite for Sight, when he finally "saw the light" and chose the EM career path. Patrick is involved with the American Academy of Emergency Medicine, combining his interest in EM and ophthalmology by writing a presentation on ocular emergencies. Because he lists "trying new restaurants" as a hobby in his application, we challenge him to hit all of the top 100 restaurants in San Francisco, as listed in the Chronicle.
Jacob Miss, MD
Drexel University

Rollover:
Jacob at Machu Picchu

Jacob received his Bachelors degrees from Grinnell College in Biology and History. In a way, Jacob is returning home, because he spent 2 years as a Research Associate in the UCSF Division of Cardiology, where he amassed an impressive list of publications. While at Drexel, he was a star in his clinical rotations and many of his letters mentioned that he will be a leader in EM. He is not only a hard-core academician but also a hard-core musician. He plays the acoustic and electric guitar, and has been featured at benefit concerts during medical school. Maybe he'll hold a benefit concert to raise money for all the debt that our interns have amassed during interview season and over the years!
Annemarie Sheets, MD
Washington University
Annemarie received her Bachelors degree from MIT in Biology. While at MIT, she was a founding member and Director of Residential Operations of a student-run Emergency Medical Service for the campus. As a cellist in a piano trio, she also helped to found the Washington University School of Medicine Arts Commission to integrate various musical groups and promote humanism in medicine. Clinically and academically, she was at the top of her class. Several of her letters noted that she was known for her can-do attitude, maturity, and calm poise under pressure. Perhaps this is a result of her background training in Muay Thai kickboxing. Don't mess with Annemarie.

Eric Silman, MD
UC Irvine

Rollover
: Rockin'
out in his band
Eric received his Bachelors degree in Biology from UC Irvine. He is finally making a clean break from being at UC Irvine seemingly forever for college and medical school (although he will still be in the UC system). During medical school, Eric was one of the major organizers for the Southern California EM Student Workshop Symposium, the only student-to-student EM conference in the U.S. Despite his many accolades and accomplishments in education, community service, and academics, his letter writers comment that he doesn't take himself too seriously. He plays drums for a rock band and is an outgoing, charismatic, and fun-loving individual. We worry that he may be the secret prankster in this intern group.
Swati Singh, MD
George Washington University

Rollover
: Swati's
wedding reception
Swati received her Bachelors degree in Business Administration from UNC Chapel Hill. Her prior life experiences as a senior consultant and database administrator for Arthur Anderson Consulting, a middle school teacher, and an intern for the US Senate Subcommittee on Health set Swati apart amongst her fellow medical students at George Washington University. Her letters often commented on her natural maturity, communication skills, and leadership qualities. Incredibly, despite how amazing she appeared on paper, she was even more impressive in person when we interviewed her. Many of her letters commented that she is a well rounded all-star who will do great things during residency. We believe it.

Jenny Wilson, MD MS
UC San Francisco

Rollover: Jenny with
her birthday tiara
Jenny is one of our two hometown UCSF students who matched with us! Despite being in our very first group of interviewees for the program, the faculty couldn't stop talking about how great she was throughout the entire interview season. Jenny received her Bachelors degree from Yale in American Studies. Jenny received her Masters degree from Berkeley in Health and Medical Sciences, focusing on direct-to-consumer advertising practices of pharmaceutical companies. When Jenny rotated in the ED at SF General, we knew immediately that she would be a perfect fit for our program. She has boundless energy, has a sharp sense of humor, is an amazingly natural educator, AND sings bluegrass music!
